Two Large Grants Enable SCAS to Expand into the Natural and Medical Sciences

Today it was announced that the Swedish Collegium has been approved a grant totalling SEK 18 million
over five years by The Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation for an interdisciplinary research programme
with the aim to bridge the gap between the humanities and social sciences on the one hand, and medicine
and the natural sciences on the other. This grant adds to the grant of SEK 18.75 million over five years
previously approved by The Erling Persson Family Foundation.

The two generous grants enable the Collegium to expand its activities into the natural and medical sciences
and thus to intensify the efforts to prepare for the inclusion of scholars also from these fields into the
community of Fellows in residence. Ever since its foundation 30 years ago, the Collegium has aimed at
serving as a free meeting place and a breeding ground for new ideas across disciplinary, national and age
boundaries, and the expansion made possible by the new funding provides a new, exciting dimension to this
ambition.

The project is being developed by SCAS principal Professor Björn Wittrock in collaboration with Professors
Ulf Danielsson, Hans Ellegren, Gunnar Ingelman, Ulf Landegren, Dan Larhammar, Nikolai Piskunov and
Ulf Pettersson at Uppsala University.
